Just a short example of the system I've developed in play. Using the idea of the Ruritanian Romance setting.
The evil Captain Slaven, stands at the end of the great hall with the beautiful Princess Iva Sofija. Flanked by a pair of guards, they stand before the priest preparing to marry them. Suddenly the doors of the great hall are crashed open by Donovan Wolfe! Using Captain Slavens own car! Donovan leaps from the wreck of the car, revolver in hand. I've come for you my love Iva!
Donovan and the guards roll initiative.
Donovan 10
Guardsman one 2
Guardsman two 9
Donovan rolls highest and acts first. He decides that he needs to take out both of these guards right away. He elects to take two shots.
Shot on guardsman one is 2d6 (7) +2 for pistolero ability +1 from Deftness bonus for a total of 10. Striking to guardsman. The webley revolver hes using does 2d4 damage, he rolls 5. The guardsman must make a grit roll. He rolls 10 succeeding.
Donovan second shot is 2d6 (6) +2 for pistolero ability +1 from Deftness bonus -2 for second shot for a total of 7. Which is just barely a hit. 2d4 damage for 3 points. The guardsman rolls 3 for his grit roll failing. He falls unconscious.
It is now the wounded guardsman's turn. Being gravely wounded, he drops his rifle and flees.
Captain Slaven screams at the fleeing Guardsman in Serbian. Before turning to Donovan.
"So do you plan on shooting me down like a dog? Or do you have the courage to face me man to man." he says drawing his rapier.
"Oh, I've been waiting for the day. To settle our differences, in a martial fashion." says Donovan dropping the revolver, and drawing his own rapier.
They both roll initiative.
Donovan 9
Captain Slaven 5
Once again Donovan acts first. He strikes at the evil Captain. 2d6 (8) +2 for Swordsman, +1 Deftness bonus for a total of 11. The Captain defends 2d6 (9) +2 for Swordsman, +1 Deftness for a total of 12.
Captain Slaven successfully defends. Because he has the Swordsman ability, he may riposte (Immediately counter attack). He rolls to attack 2d6 (6) +2, +1 for a total of 9. Donovan defends 2d6 (10) +2 +1 for a total of 13. Successfully defending. Now having Swordsman as well he may riposte. Donovan rolls to attack 2d6 (6) +2 +1 for a total of 9. The Captain defends 2d6 (3) +2 +1 for a total of 6. Donovan successfully hits the Captain. He rolls damage 1d6 (4). The Captain takes 4 points of damage to his Hit Points. The Captain must now make a Grit roll. He rolls a 10, keeping from passing out.
Its now the Captains turn to attack. He rolls 2d6 (6) +2 +1 for a total of 9. Donovan defends. 2d6 (3) +2 +1 for a total of 6. He is struck by the captain. The captain rolls damage. 1d6 (2). Donovan takes 2 points of damage. He makes his Grit roll 10, succeeding.
Now its Donovans turn to attack. 2d6 (8) +2 +1 for a total of 11. The Captains defense, 2d6 (5) +2 +1 for a total of 8. Donovan strikes! Rolling damage he rolls a 3. Striking the Captain down dead.
