On one of the
rpg forums I enjoy, their is a big discussion about OSR. Whats it means, what it represents. Obviously there are some people very passionate about the subject, is one way or another. My opinion is pretty cut and dry. Perhaps different that yours. But mine is, that OSR is TSRish type D&D powered/like game. Other old school games are not really OSR. (Such as Traveller, or Top Secret) They are old school, most definitely. But not under the OSR banner. Which has really become a marketing/trademark. Now that said there's a lot of really cool old school stuff being made out there besides OSR. Traveller/Cepheus Engine, Stare Frontiers, and RQ to name but just a few.
Here's the important part. Read and play what you enjoy. If inclined you should write something for OSR or old school. It all needs, deserves love. Just because a rule set is old, or is based on old ideas doesnt mean its not fun or enjoyable. If you haven't ever played Star Frontiers, Red Box D&D, or James Bond. You should give them a try. I think you will be surprised at how well they work, and how much fun they are. Not saying you should play any newer games. They are good/fun as well. But don't overlook something because its "old".
